Arthur B. Hodess, MD, FACC

Dr. Hodess is the longest-serving member of BVCA, having joined the group in 1979.  He has served as Chief of Cardiology and Director of Critical Care at Brandywine Hospital since 1990.  A native New Yorker, Dr. Hodess completed his undergraduate work at Boston University, graduating Magna Cum Laude.  He completed medical school at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating as an Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society inductee.  Dr. Hodess completed both his residency and cardiology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a member of the American Heart Association, the American Society of Physicians, and the American College of Chest Physicians.

 

Dr. Hodess’ greatest professional gratification comes from treating critically-ill patients in the intensive care unit.  His philosophy of medical practice: “Close follow-up after initial diagnoses and treatment prevents further cardiac problems.”

 

The father of five sons, Dr. Hodess enjoys music, tennis, fitness training, theater, and opera.

Thomas S. Metkus, MD, FACC

Dr. Metkus is a veteran cardiologist with BVCA, having joined in 1983.   Born in western Pennsylvania, he earned graduated Summa Cum Laude with an Engineering degree from the University of Pittsburgh.  He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia as an Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society inductee.  Dr. Metkus completed his residency and cardiology fellowship at Abington Memorial and Temple University Hospitals, Philadelphia.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American Heart Association.

 

An avid runner, Dr. Metkus spearheaded BVCA’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Center—the only physician-owned facility of its type in Chester County--of which he serves as Director.  His greatest professional gratification is bringing Preventive Cardiology to all of BVCA’s patients, and in optimizing their cardiovascular health through exercise.  His philosophy of medical practice: “I believe in compassionate care using state-of-the-art technology and evidence-based medicine.”

 

Dr. Metkus and his wife, Dr. Loretta Bonanni-Metkus—a Pediatrician—have five children, one of whom has followed his parents’ calling as a physician.

David J. Bernbaum, MD, FACC

Dr. Bernbaum is a Philadelphia native and has been a Cardiologist with BVCA since 1987.  He earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania.  He subsequently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine as an Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society inductee and completed his residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Bernbaum completed his cardiology fellowship at Hahnemann University Hospital and Crozer-Chester Medical Center.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a member of the American Heart Association, and is certified by the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.

 

Dr. Bernbaum’s special interest is in reading echocardiograms, and his greatest professional interest is diagnosing and treating coronary artery disease and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.  His philosophy of medical practice: “I believe in treating each person as a unique individual, and I use a detailed approach to treating the whole person.”

 

With his wife, Dr. Judy Bernbaum—a professor of Pediatrics and Director of the high-risk, neonatal follow-up program at Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania—Dr. Bernbaum breeds and shows Maine Coon cats.  His other interests include sailing, photography, metal sculpture, and sports cars.

Dr. Troy, named one of Main Line Today Magazine’sTop Doctors’, has been with BVCA since 1988.  Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he earned his BS in Molecular Biology from MIT, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.  Dr. Troy graduated from University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine as an Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society inductee.  He completed his residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, his cardiology fellowship at Temple University Hospital, and his invasive and interventional fellowship at Hahnemann University Hospital.  Dr. Troy is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.

 

During his eighteen years with BVCA, he has performed a large number of cardiac catheterizations and interventions.  He was the first to perform patient-friendly trans-radial catheterizations in Chester County.  Dr. Troy finds his greatest professional gratification in performing coronary interventions in very elderly patients and very sick patients with severe disease.  His personal philosophy of medical practice: “The question I ask when taking care of my patients is this: How can I improve the quality or length of life for this person?"

Whenever possible, Dr. Troy enjoys traveling, hiking, and bicycling with his wife.  Closer to home, he enjoys reading books about theoretical physics

Donald V. Ferrari, DO, FACC

Dr. Ferrari, a native New Yorker, joined BVCA in 1991.  He attended the State University of New York and earned his medical degree at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Dr. Ferrari completed his residency and cardiology fellowships at Long Island College Hospital and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he served as Chief Resident.  Dr. Ferrari is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and is certified by the American Society of Nuclear Cardiologists.  He holds a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and started BVCA’s nuclear imaging program.

 

Dr. Ferrari spearheaded BVCA’s rollout of a new electronic medical records (EMR) system, bringing the group to the forefront of modern medical-data management.  His greatest professional gratification comes from harmonizing state-of-the-art techniques and systems with personalized patient care.  His personal philosophy of medical practice: “I want to see the patient through to optimal health, and then help him or her maintain it.”

 

Dr. Ferrari is a sports-and-fitness enthusiast; he enjoys outdoor activities and family outings with his wife and four children.

Antonio Chamoun, MD, FACC, SCAI

Dr. Chamoun is BVCA’s newest Interventional Cardiologist, joining the group in 2004 and adding peripheral-vascular interventions to its skill set.  A native of Beirut, Lebanon, he graduated in the top fifth percentile from St. Joseph University’s French Faculty of Medicine.  He moved to the United States and completed his residency at Cooper University Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey, where he was named ‘Best Resident of the Year’.  He received his cardiology fellowship at the University of Texas, where he also earned the honor of ‘Teaching Faculty of the Year’.  Dr. Chamoun is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.

 

Dr. Chamoun has already distinguished himself by performing Chester County’s first carotid artery stenting procedure.  His greatest professional gratification is found in performing all aspects of interventional cardiac, peripheral vascular, and carotid procedures.  His personal philosophy of medical practice: “I want to increase awareness of cardiovascular disease, and use early screening to help prevent it or slow its progress.”

 

The father of two, he is married to Dr. Dionne Curran-Chamoun, a Family Practitioner.  When he’s not in the cath lab, Dr. Chamoun enjoys music and foreign literature.

Michael Sabadish, MD

Dr. Sabadish is BVCA’s newest Cardiologist, joining the group in 2005 and adding Cardiac Electrophysiology to its skill set.  Hailing from Northeastern, Pennsylvania, he studied Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and earned his medical degree from Hahnemann University Hospital, Philadelphia.  Dr. Sabadish completed his residency and Cardiology Fellowship at Medical College of Philadelphia-Hahnemann University Hospital.

 

Dr. Sabadish’s specialty is Electrophysiology, including cardiac device implantation and the use of minimally-invasive evaluation and therapy of arrhythmias.  He finds his greatest professional gratification in performing ablation therapy on supraventricular arrhythmias.  His personal philosophy of medical practice: “Treat the patient; not the disease”.

 

The father of two, he is married to Dr. Kimberly Sabadish, who practices Internal Medicine locally.  In addition to skiing and building computers, Dr. Sabadish enjoys the colorful collection of tropical fish in his home aquarium.

George M. Protenic, PA-C

George Protenic, PA

George Protenic is an NCCPA-certified Physician’s Assistant and a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, with specialized training in programming pacemakers and defibrillators, as well as right-heart catheterization, endomyocardial biopsies, and hemodynamic monitoring.  Mr. Protenic finds his greatest professional gratification going to work everyday and being a member of a specialized team providing state-of-the-art cardiac care to our patients.  His personal philosophy of medical practice:
